Our Injured Dog Fund

We often pull dogs that needed extensive medical care. We do not regret pulling these dogs, as this is what we do! We save all the dogs we can, regardless of breed, age, sex, or size. There were a few dogs that needed some extra help, and we helped them. Unfortunately, this left us with just about $8000 in vet bills for these special needs dogs. We decided we had to stop pulling urgent dogs for a few weeks, until we could get some of these bills paid. We stopped pulling for about 2-3 weeks, managed to raise some money to help with the bills, and get a few of our foster dogs into their forever homes. We've started pulling urgent dogs again, but are still in desperate need of your help to get these bills paid, so we can help more special needs dogs. Please consider donating, whether it be $1 or $100, every single dollar helps!

Possum

Picture
Some of you might remember Possum from earlier this year. He was pulled from a high kill shelter in his last hours, and had a small case of Demodex mang. He is 8 years old, and at the time, only had mange on his feet. No one wanted this senior dog due to his bare feet and old age, but HSO saw his inner beauty and stepped up for him. Once he was placed in a foster home, his demodex began to get worse. It flared up and spread to most of his body. Despite his condition, he was adopted by an amazing couple. They stuck by him despite his hardships, and his flare ups are now being treated. HSO is obviously paying the cost of his vetting, which to date is around $800. We are trying to recoup the costs of this unexpected expense. If you can donate even a dollar to help Possum, please do so through the Urgent Dog Fund. I am going to post a few pictures showing his condition, so all can see just how bad the poor baby looked. HSO takes in dogs like Possum often, when no one else will step up for them. This is a good example of why we have to charge an adoption fee... Possum has cost us upwards of $1400 between his pull fees, vet work, several transports, and new vet work. Any help we can get would be great. Thanks everyone!

Cobi - Needed Emergency Surgery!

Cobi got off transport on 4/25, and her foster mom noticed that she had blown her stitches from her spay. She was taken to an emergency vet with her stomach hanging open, and required surgery to fix the problem. She went from the emergency vet to a regular vet for her surgery. Between the two vet clinics, her bill was over $1100. Please donate to her if you can, we need some help with this unexpected bill! We do not regret pulling and taking in this girl, but her unexpected surgery bill really did us in. Please help if you can! Just use the urgent dog fund above, and note that it is for Cobi.

Ruff - Needs His Leg Amputated- Updated 4/15/09

Update 4/20/09: Well Ruff has been adopted by the drug rep and her sister adopted Scratch! These two boys will be able to see each other now but still get the individual attention they need. We have raised $400 for his surgery and the total cost was $1500 so we are still accepting donations just please note it is for Ruff.

What a happy ending. Reminds me of the below quote:

Until you have held a tiny puppy in your arms as it kissed your face with slobbery puppy breath ... and felt the love,
Until you have held an injured or severely ill dog in your arms ... and felt their pain
Until you have looked into the eyes of a tired aging senior dog ... and felt their wisdom,
And until you have seen and understood the look in your dogs eyes that tell you their time on earth with you is over .... and you humanely let them go,
You will never understand the life of a rescuer.
We find beauty in the most incomprehensible places and the otherwise homely faces.
It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness and defeat and find the true soul that lies within.
We are Rescue.

Update 4/15/09 : Ruff is safely out of surgery that was to surgically remove his leg (see injured dog page for Ruff's story). We wanted to let everyone know he is safe and recovering with his foster mom. A drug rep at the animal hospital was so taken with Ruff that it appears he may have a home to go to :)

Ruff's surgery came to $1500 and we are hoping people will help with donations so we can continue to take in dogs like Ruff who so desperately deserve to live their lives free of pain and suffering.

A big thank you to Andrea, Jay, and family who have been instrumental in Ruff's healing!

4/9/09: Some of you may know Ruff and Scratch's story. Here is their original story: These two adorable boys need a home together. They were owned by a family that was allergic to them, and they lived outside all the time. They kept escaping, and the owners realized that they could not keep them any longer. On one of their escapes, Ruff was hit by a car. He didn't break any bones, but has a sprain and a splint on his leg. These two are sweethearts that are ok with cats, and would be ok with dogs with proper introduction. We realize it will be very difficult to get two scruffy looking mixed dogs adopted together, but we committed to them, and we'll stuck by them. They are 5 years old.

Well, when they arrived, Ruff was in rough shape! He had chewed his leg to the point where it needs to be amputated. He has radial nerve damage, and to him, his leg is no different than a bone... he does not know that it's attached to his leg. We're not sure if it happened on transport, or the day he arrived at his foster home, but he was taken to a vet as soon as it was noticed... and the vet said it would be better to remove the leg, because he will just continue to chew on it. We attached a picture of his leg before he saw the vet (CAUTION, IT IS VERY GRAPHIC), and a picture of him after it had been wrapped. The poor guy!

His surgery is looking like it will cost between $1500 and $2000. Any amount helps, and we need some serious donations to help this little guy. Please help if you can!! Please use the Injured Dog Fund above, and note that it is for Ruff.

Piglet - Update as of 4/15/09!

4/15/09 - I have put off making this update because it is heartbreaking. Piglet did see his cardiologist and after alot of testing and x rays it has been concluded that Piglets is NOT a candidate for the surgery. His heart is too enlarged and he also has a hole in it. Piglets prognosis is a life expectancy of 4-9 months. His foster mom has agreed to keep him and we will be continuing bi weekly blood work for oxygen level information. Piglet will be allowed to live out his natural life as long as he is not suffering or in pain. Right now, it is hard for him to exert himself but he has a nice place on the couch and sleeps next to his foster dad each night.

I also wanted to share the letter his foster mom and dad sent to us:

My little story about piglet:

Piglet came to me with no fur and contracted a bad case of pneumonia due to his weakened immune system. Every time he would even get remotely excited he would struggle just to catch his breath. We thought maybe something was wrong with his lungs. So they ordered an x-ray and found out he had a very bad heart that was untreatable. The doctor told me that piglet had an estimated time of 4-9 months to live but the odds don't look very well, his breathing seems to get worse as the days go by. But were trying our hardest to let him live the rest of his life out a happy puppy., with as much love and care we can give him.  After all his treatments and med's he started to grow his hair back and feel like a puppy again. And now he's a handsome young man. All he wants to do is play with my kids and my other dogs. He's the sweetest dog ever he just loves to lay with us on the couch and he cuddle with you he will put his head right on our shoulder and both front paws on each side of our shoulders like a little kid. Loves to ride shotgun in the truck no matter where i go.  He's full of so much life and he's such a good boy, he doesn't leave our side. From the time we go to bed he's right there next to the bed and doesn't move a bit till we all wake up in the morning. He likes to lay with my daughter and watch cartoons in the morning,  his favorite show is sponge bob. ( My daughter said he told her that) sometimes I think he really understands the t.v. lol. He's almost like a person. Piglet would have made someone the perfect companion and its really sad that he had to be dealt this rough card in life. But hes here with us and were really happy to have found him. We think of him as more than just our foster dog because he's here with us till he goes to doggy heaven where he can watch down on us. I still fear the day he wont wake up in the morning but I know in my heart he's happy and not in any pain. All any dog wants is to be loved. They don't care if your rich or poor, what you look like or what kind of car you drive as long as you treat them good there going to love you unconscionably forever knowing you were there for them and you loved them. Everyone say a prayer for sweet little piglet, keep him in your thoughts and remember him forever :)
Piglets Foster Mom - Kim

3/24/09 - We sent out this email today, and I thought it would be easiest just to post it here, to share Piglet's story.

Hello Everyone,

Help Save One has a dog named Piglet we took from Greenville County shelter (our favorite shelter and love working with them). He had really bad mange and no one wanted him so we took him because he is beautiful and deserved a chance. We try to pull urgent dogs who need it the most even if they have mange, heartworm positive, are old, sick, etc.....Each one of them deserves a chance at good vetting and a wonderful, safe, and loving home.

Well when we got Piglet we noticed he would tip his head up and struggle for air. We  have found out he has an enlarged heart and when we had chest X rays done he has one of the largest hearts the vet has ever seen. His face and gums turn blue when he runs and he is now confined to a crate. The vet said ANY exertion can kill him until surgery. He can not walk up stairs, play, and should not even be walking freely.

We do not even know if the surgery will work but our philosophy is if we pull the dog we have to do right by then and give them every chance possible.

If you are on this email I wanted to see if you would consider sending out Piglets story and link to others you know. We of course would like donations since his open heart surgery will be around $$3000-4000 but also we really just want people to know that Piglet exists and to think about him. This is a 4 month old puppy who has suffered so much but yet is so loving and wants SO much to live and play with the others.

We also want to acknowledge Greenville shelter in SC and their team. They tirelessly promote these dogs and have brought extremely special dogs into our lives. Piglet is very well loved by Help Save One and his foster home. We want to do everything we can for him. He has been treated for mange, URI, and a secondary skin infection. Now he has to deal with open heart surgery but we are hoping he will be like new when he gets out.

I know some would and will say 'do you know how many dogs can be saved with $4000'  and I do understand that. On the flip side Piglet can be saved with those funds and live another 15 happy years. That would mean $266 per year or $22 a month or .74 cents a day to potentially save his life. Piglet is worth that to us. He is part of Help Save One and signifies for us what our rescue is all about.

Anyone wanting to contact the vet where Piglet is just send me a quick note so we provide you with the info you need.

Becca and Wilson

BECCA AND WILSON HAVE ARRIVED!!!

PLEASE READ THEIR AMAZING STORY AND ALL ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE RESCUE EFFORTS OF ANGEL DOG RESCUE. THEY ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

Angel Dog Rescue
picked up these two Chained dogs in Georgetown, GA on Jan 12 and took them to the vet after finding them loose from the chains and injured.  Wilson and Becca were so grateful to be helped and we have been told by the rescue they have never had sweeter, more gentle dogs.  They have kept them in protective custody at their home, but the owner would not surrender them and they did not know their legal rights.  On Feb. 20, the new sheriff persuaded the owner to surrender them to Angel Dog Rescue, and they waived their financial freeze on intakes to admit them.  Both dogs have needed extensive treatment including surgery for Wilson.

Read on for the rest of their story as told by Angel Dog Rescue:

Early contact with the owner: The owner finally showed himself the night we picked his dogs up.  I told him they were in "protective custody" and being treated for their wounds.  I told him I had reported him to the sheriff for animal neglect and abuse. I won't try to repeat the hour-long conversation.  He appreciated our giving them dog houses and helping them, and wanted to do better, would we help him?  We believed him that he cares and wanted to do better.  We believed it was…. lets call it ignorance (not any more).  I had him sign an agreement allowing me to spay and neuter them.  But he refused to surrender them.  He agreed to put up a fence and see that they are cared for.  We would monitor their care.  The sheriff planned to tell him official charges would not be filed if he cooperates with Angel Dog.  A month later, there was still no fence and had not heard from him.  No one has seen him at his home, which is not unusual.   That was fine.  I wanted time to learn what our legal rights were.

Wilson and Becca's physical condition:  They both had bite wounds all over and enlarged, infected knots on their necks.  Becca's collar was so tight that her voice was reduced to a gravelly squeek, and it will never be normal. On top of her initial treatment for wounds, Becca has had to have stitches in her lip.  We were worried it would mar her beautiful face, but thanks to the skill of our vet, she is just as lovely as ever.  One of Wilson's inuries involved his salivary gland in his neck (shown in the photo).  These did not respond to treatment as hoped and ended up requiring surgery.  Treatment has been ongoing.

Vet treatment:
Angel Dog Rescue has spent close to $1600 at this point on the dogs and has raised approx $650. We would like to reimburse them for all vetting and make a donation to this incredible rescue. We also need funding for their future care since they will need follow up care including possible heartworm treatment. Can you help these two. They basically were taken in from years of neglect and their care will be ongoing. The financial strain this has placed on Angel Dog Rescue has been immense but they got them what they needed. Please consider helping.

What Help Save One needs from their supporters:
We would love to find Wilson and Becca a forever home where they can live together. We have commited to NOT splitting them up. We also need donations, offers of fostering assistance, and please keep Wilson and Becca in your thoughts and prayers.

These two should DEFINATELY be on the cover of a calendar or magazine. In their faces they reflect the very best and worst of humanity. The worst for the ignorance we face everyday when people take dogs like Wilson and Becca, chain them up, and forget about them. The best for the efforts of Angel Dog Rescue for looking beyond the situation, breed, and circumstances and seeing Becca and Wilson for what they were - Two sweet and wonderful dogs who deserved a MUCH better life.

UPDATE: BECCA TESTED HW NEGATIVE BUT WILSON IS POSITIVE.

Below are Becca (left) and Wilson's (right) BEFORE photos.

Noodles - Embedded Collar - Had Surgery

Well the only thing we can hope for is that there is a special place for people who do this to our companion animals. Noodles is an absolutely sweet 6 month old Pit Bull who is suffering the effects of an embedded collar which comes from the owner usually leaving the dog chained, and as the dog grows they never adjusted the collar. Thanks to this, it grew into the neck. It's just so sad what this dog must of endured and is still SO sweet. Lets you pick her right up and loves everyone. Her neck WILL be treated and all her vetting done prior to adoption.

Right now this baby is in a nice foster home who is understanding and will give her the time to heal. What we really need is to have funds to be able to cover her medical costs. The bills are adding up. Please consider sponsoring Noodles and give her a second chance at life.

We also wanted to share this story with you... One of our volunteers sent it to us.

"My daughter, who is going to be 3 in June, walks in when I was looking at a picture of Noodles (who resembles my pit mix) and she said "Mommy, how come someone ripped that puppies neck?" I told her that she was going to be OK and that someone was giving her lots of love right now.  She said "Why did someone have fresh behaviors and give the puppy a boo boo, the mommy and daddy should be giving them loves and hugs!" I told her that her new mommy and daddy will be giving them lots of that.

So I thought, how come a toddler that isn't even 3 knows that this pup and all the others should be loved and cared for, and the idiots that we encounter everyday doesn't see a good thing when they have it? I just thought I would share that with you, she amazes me more and more each day and I strongly believe she is going to make a difference when she grows up as did you."

Please click on the injured dog fund above and specify NOODLES in your donation so we know where to place it. Also provide the best email address to reach you at so we can keep you updated.

Updated Pictures of Noodles!

Marley - Hit By a Car! Needs Surgery!

Marley is a cattle dog mix puppy. She is 16 weeks old and was hit by a car. Her hip is dislocated so her owners turned her in. We pulled her, and have placed her in a foster home while we raise the funds for her surgery. It is being estimated around $2,000 right now... If anyone can help please donate through the Injured Dog Fund above and specify the funds are for Marley. Also include the best email address to reach you at so we can keep you updated on her.

UPDATE 4/27/09: Marley had her surgery and was spayed. She has been adopted and is happy and healthy in her new home. We still have bills from her, so please continue to donate. Just note it is for Marley, and we will put it to her fund.

Updated Pictures of Marley

Lily has a Broken Leg

Lily was pulled from the shelter with her sister Daisy (who has since been adopted to a great home). Lily was in her new foster home on her first night there, and she slipped on the ice and broke her leg. She was rushed to an orthopedic surgeon, and needed a plate and ten screws put into her leg. The bill is almost $4,000, and we could really use some help! Please consider donating to Lily's bill! She's resting comfortably in her foster home, and will be available for adoption when her leg is all set.

Molly - Shot with a Shotgun

This poor, sweet girl was pulled from a shelter in GA last week. She is not only heartworm positive, but when the vet took pictures of her to check on her heartworms, they found this... 6 pieces of metal in her chest and abdomen. The vet has said that they're either BB's, small bullets, or pieces of shrapnel from a shotgun shell. Regardless of what they are, this poor pup did NOT deserve what she got. We also suspect that she was used for breeding before being dumped at the shelter. She is going to need extensive treatment for her heartworm, that will total around $600, and she may need surgery to take out the metal pieces which will cost in the thousands. Please consider donating to help her!

Limpy with the Injured Leg - SURGERY COMPLETED 10/6/08

Limpy is a sad case. He was left in an outside pen at a shelter. When he was brought to the vet it was found he had EXTENSIVE injuries that most likely had occured two weeks prior. It was either abuse or a car which caused his injuries. The vet communicated the Limpy either needed to be put to sleep immediately or be sedated and have surgery performed first thing Monday morning. Help Save One and his foster mom decided to save this dog. We found out his leg was broken in 3 places, it was a compound fracture, and he had a severe infection. The vet said this dog was in agony but he handled it wonderfully and was trying his best to wag his tail and be good. He underwent his surgery and the total cost was $2147.00. Worth every penny. We are trying to raise donations to help with this expense, so feel free to donate to the INJURED DOG FUND. We had several dogs this week who needed extensive care that added up. Please feel free to contact us for the vet information if you like to call and speak with the hospital who performed this operation that saved Limpy's leg and quite possibly his life. No dog deserves to be dumped in pain and given no care. Limpy is very special to us and to his foster family. I have included his pre and post op X Rays along with his "AFTER" picture below. His pictures above is  "BEFORE".

DJ the Great Pyrenees Puppy - On the Road to Recovery!

This is another one of our injured, special needs pups. This gorgeous, purebred Great Pyrenees puppy was pulled from a high kill shelter in the South on his last day, and went to a wonderful foster home in MA. While at his foster home, he came down with something, and was brought to Tufts. His foster mom wanted him to get the best possible care. It turned out to be pneumonia, and he was hospitalized at Tufts for 5 days. His vet bills totaled over $2000, but he is now home and on the road to recovery! Please consider donating to the INJURED DOG FUND, to help pay his bills. It's dogs like these that we love!

Paula - Victim of an Attack

Paula was the victim of a dog attack while at the shelter. She was pretty badly injured when the other, larger dog grabbed her by the throat and thrashed her back and forth. A dedicated volunteer rushed her to her vet and had her wounds treated. Paula was pretty shaky for the first couple of days after leaving the vets but her bandages came off today and she is doing well. Paula is severely underweight and putting some pounds on her is all part of her recovery. Through it all, her tail never stopped wagging, she is such a trooper! She still has a little trouble lifting her head up as the neck muscles are sore but everyday she improves. The cost of Paula’s vet care wasn’t a question when she was taken in, she deserved every penny. Now the bill has come due. Please consider donating to help her!
